David Newman to conduct May 13-15

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will present "Soundstage L.A.," a program of music from movies set in Southern California, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

Oscar-nominated composer David Newman will conduct excerpts from the scores of:

Double Indemnity (Miklos Rozsa, 1944)
Sunset Boulevard (Franz Waxman, 1950)
The Bad and the Beautiful (David Raksin, 1952)
Them! (Bronislau Kaper, 1954)
Rebel Without a Cause (Leonard Rosenman, 1955)
Chinatown (Jerry Goldsmith, 1974)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Alan Silvestri, 1988)
The Grifters (Elmer Bernstein, 1990)

Several of these scores have not previously been performed in a live concert setting.

In the case of Chinatown – the theme of which was featured in Goldsmith's frequently performed "Motion Picture Medley" – Newman went back to Goldsmith's original scores and has constructed a 10-minute suite that will receive its world premiere on May 13. He also consulted with Silvestri in assembling a suite of highlights from Who Framed Roger Rabbit that will be heard for the first time that weekend.

Film-music historian Jon Burlingame will moderate the "Upbeat Live" pre-concert talks, discussing the music and the composers. Composer Bruce Broughton will be his guest on Friday and Saturday, and Newman will join him on Sunday.
