THE BIG PICTURE – AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals
Song and Dance on film to be celebrated at the Bowl

Following last summer's celebration of the 25 greatest film scores in history, the American Film Institute and the Hollywood Bowl are teaming up once again to present the 25 Greatest Hollywood Movie Musicals of all time. On Sunday, September 3, 2006, John Mauceri will lead the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performing musical numbers live to film clips in an exciting countdown to the Number One Musical.

AFI's popular "100 Years..." series was created to re-inspire audience appreciation for classic American cinema, and the upcoming Top 25 greatest musicals is a continuation of that important series.
AFI gathered together a team of renowned movie musical experts to create a preliminary list of 180 titles. From there, the Institute distributed ballots to a jury of more than 500 members of the entertainment industry, including composers, musicians, film creators and technicians, journalists, critics and historians.

The comprehensive list of titles included a diversity of American film musicals spanning the sound era from 1927 to the present, from Broadway Melody of 1929 to Chicago, from The Wizard of Oz to Moulin Rouge. Among the multitude of criteria for consideration were that the film was produced in the U.S.; that it was of historical significance or was a groundbreaker in its time; that it had more than just one or two songs; and that the musical performances furthered the storyline of the film. Jurors were allowed to write in titles that did not already appear on the ballot.

The complete ballot for AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals can be found at: http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/100yearslist.aspx

Showtime on September 3rd is 7:30 pm. The Hollywood Bowl is located at 2301 N. Highland Avenue in Hollywood. Tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster (213) 480-3232 or online at http://hollywoodbowl.com. Call (323) 850-2000 for general Bowl information.
