July 27, 2007 Miklós Rózsa Centenary Celebration at Motion Picture Academy Multi-Oscar-winning composer will be honored in a three-day tribute  The evening, hosted by journalist/historian Jon Burlingame, will feature film clips and an onstage panel discussion with film historian Rudy Behlmer; Academy Music Branch Governor and composer Bruce Broughton; and Juliet Rózsa, daughter of the composer.  Rózsa's impact on the world of film music will be celebrated throughout the weekend, continuing Saturday, August 18 at the Linwood Dunn Theater, 1313 North Vine St. in Hollywood, with a screening of The Thief of Bagdad (1940) at 7:00 pm and The Killers (1946) at 9:00 pm. The celebration will conclude on Sunday, August 19 with a screening of the large-scale epic El Cid (1961) at 7:00 pm, also at the Linwood Dunn. Rózsa received 17 Academy Award nominations between 1940 and 1961 – 16 for music scores, and one for song. He won Oscars for his scores to Spellbound (1945), A Double Life (1947) and Ben-Hur (1959). Tickets are $5 per evening for the general public and may be purchased beginning August 1 on-line at www.oscars.org or with a mail-in order form. Doors open at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at 6:30 pm and at the Linwood Dunn Theater at 6:00 pm.  Later this year, The Film Music Society will honor Rózsa's centenary with the restoration and CD release of a never-before-heard 1974 interview with Rózsa, conducted by historian Rudy Behlmer. A special issue of Society's quarterly journal, The Cue Sheet, Vol. 22, No. 4 (October 2007), will pay homage to the beloved composer.  |
