Giacchino LACMA Talk to be Broadcast
Composer of Ratatouille, Lost discusses his craft

Composer Michael Giacchino talked with veteran journalist Jon Burlingame on March 20 at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art's Leo S. Bing Theater as part of the Zócalo Public Square Lecture Series.

That talk will be broadcast on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 9 p.m. on 89.3 KPCC-FM. It will subsequently be available as a podcast. Los Angeles cable viewers will be able to see the event on L.A. cable channel 36 at the following times: 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 15; 9 p.m. Thursday, April 17; 7 p.m. Sunday, April 20; and 10 p.m. Sunday, April 20.

Now considered one of the hottest – and most in-demand – composers in Hollywood, Michael Giacchino had some hurdles to climb in his career path. In this visit to Zócalo, the Grammy winner and recent Oscar nominee tells Burlingame that, despite his success as a video game composer for Steven Spielberg, nobody would even talk to him about writing scores for film or television.

Nevertheless, from his background as a spunky New Jersey kid who cobbled together movies using his dad's old 8 millimeter camera and eclectic record collection – to working odd jobs in the Industry – Giacchino explains how his mettle was tested and how he ultimately prevailed. In this funny and fast-paced interview, the genial tunesmith talks about his work on such popular Pixar films as The Incredibles and Ratatouille and the TV shows Alias and Lost.

He also gives us sneak peeks of the soon-to-be-released Speed Racer and his upcoming Star Trek project.
