Hollywood in Vienna Gala Concert
John Barry to receive first Max Steiner Award

VIENNA, Austria—Distinguished film composer John Barry will be tributed amidst some of Hollywood's music royalty when the Radio-Symphony Orchestra Vienna performs a gala concert of film music called "Hollywood in Vienna" October 14 at the Vienna Concert Hall.

The City of Vienna will present five-time Oscar winner Barry with the newly established Max Steiner Life Achievement Award, named for the prolific, Viennese-born pioneer of film music whose Hollywood career spanned more than thirty years.

The concert program will include highlights from several of Barry's most famous scores, including Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves, as well as a James Bond suite. Barry is scheduled to accept the award in person.

The program will also feature selections by other prominent composers, including Casablanca (Max Steiner), Lawrence of Arabia (Maurice Jarre), Seven Years in Tibet (John Williams), Silverado (Bruce Broughton) and The Day After Tomorrow (Harald Kloser). Composers Broughton and Kloser will be in attendance, along with composer David Arnold (Quantum of Solace) and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli.

John Barry
American conductor John Axelrod will host and conduct the evening, with guest conductor Nicholas Dodd conducting the Barry tribute.

The concert is the second in a series that began in 2007, which marked the first time that film music was performed in a major Viennese venue.

Composers Barry, Broughton, Arnold, Kloser and conductor Dodd will participate in an international film music symposium October 9 and 10 at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts.
