December 10, 2009 KUSC-FM Film Composers Series L.A. classical radio tributes Herrmann, Steiner LOS ANGELES—The careers of two giants of film music will be explored in a pair of two-hour radio specials airing this month on KUSC-FM, one of the nation's leading classical music stations. On Dangerous Ground: A Tribute to Bernard Herrmann airs at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. The American-born Herrmann, whose cinema partnerships included directors Orson Welles (Citizen Kane), Alfred Hitchcock (Vertigo, Psycho) and Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver), will be heard in soundbites drawn from 1970s interviews; music from Herrmann's radio, television and film work, along with several concert pieces, will be included. All This, and Heaven Too: A Tribute to Max Steiner, airs at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27. The Austrian-born Steiner, whose landmark scores include King Kong, Gone With the Wind and Casablanca, will also be heard in interview snippets dating back to the 1940s, and music from his long Hollywood career will be spotlighted. Variety film-music writer and USC professor Jon Burlingame – who previously created KUSC specials devoted to Miklos Rozsa, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Jerry Goldsmith and Ennio Morricone – is writer, producer and host of both shows. Gail Eichenthal is executive producer. Classical KUSC is at 91.5 on the FM dial in the Los Angeles area. Both shows can also be heard live at www.kusc.org.  |
