March 2, 2010 American Youth Symphony Tributes Jerry Goldsmith Concert and symposium explore revered composer's film, TV scores of the 1970s and '80s  Music from The Red Pony (1973), which won Goldsmith the first of his five Emmy Awards, will be a highlight of the afternoon symposium, which will also feature panelists who knew and worked with the legendary composer. Music from Papillon (also 1973), one of Goldsmith's several collaborations with director Franklin J. Schaffner, will be featured on the evening program. The Red Pony has never been done live in concert, and only the theme from Papillon has been performed live (as part of a medley of Goldsmith themes) before now. David Newman, Oscar-nominated composer and president of the AYS, will conduct. Also on the evening program will be music from QB VII (1974), the Holocaust-themed miniseries that won Goldsmith his second Emmy; The Omen (1976), which won him an Academy Award; The Final Conflict (1981), which concluded the trilogy of Omen films; Capricorn One (1978); and Alien (1979). Alien – which will be performed with film – will include excerpts of the Goldsmith score that was largely unused in the final version of the Ridley Scott-directed science-fiction classic. The Goldsmith segment will be the second half of the evening program. Featured on the first half, conducted by AYS music director Alexander Treger, will be one of Goldsmith's concert works, Music for Orchestra, and a suite from Aaron Copland's opera The Tender Land. The Angeles Chorale will join the AYS on stage at Royce Hall. This is the second installment in a three-year multidisciplinary project exploring the music of Jerry Goldsmith. AYS launched the series in December 2008 with a live-to-picture performance of the composer's classic Twilight Zone "The Invaders," and an evening concert that included new suites from A Patch of Blue, The Sand Pebbles and Patton. Admission is free to both events. The symposium – moderated by Jon Burlingame – will begin at 4 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, the concert at 7 p.m. The American Youth Symphony is dedicated to the artistic and professional development of outstanding young musicians. Its next concert will be April 11, also at Royce Hall, featuring works by Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff.
