July 8, 2010 Emmy Music Nominations Announced Both new and familiar noms fill categories with a broad range of musical styles by Jon Burlingame NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—It's a wide-open race for music Emmys this year, with many first-time nominees in all five categories for composers and songwriters whose work appeared during the 2009-2010 season. Nominations were announced this morning by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Oscar winner Hans Zimmer (The Lion King) received his first Emmy nomination as co-composer of the HBO miniseries The Pacific; his co-writers have been to the ceremony before, Geoff Zanelli having won in 2006 for Into the West and Blake Neely having been nominated in 2003 for his Everwood theme. Fellow Oscar winner Randy Newman could walk away with his third Emmy for his song in the final episode of USA's Monk. He previously won in 2004 for his Monk theme and in 1991 for a song from the pilot of Cop Rock. Other past winners who could repeat include Michael Giacchino, who won in 2005 for Lost and could win again for the Lost finale; Sean P. Callery, who has notched his ninth nomination for 24 and has won twice (in 2003 and 2006); Jeff Beal, a contender for Lifetime's Georgia O'Keeffe telefilm and who has won three Emmys (for Monk, Nightmares & Dreamscapes and The Company); and Lawrence Shragge, a 2001 winner for Haven who could repeat with the Hallmark Hall of Fame film When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story. Marc Shaiman is up in two categories this year, for music direction for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards and as a writer on the same show. A three-time nominee prior to this year, he won in 1992 as a writer on the Oscars. David Foster, a 2003 winner in the song category, is nominated this year for music direction on the PBS special, Andrea Bocelli & David Foster: My Christmas, for Great Performances. Previous Emmy winners in the song category who might repeat in 2010 include Family Guy composer/lyricist team Walter Murphy and Seth MacFarlane; and the Saturday Night Live team of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, for the "Shy Ronnie" number on SNL's Blake Lively episode. Daytime Emmy winners Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion and Kristopher Carter (Batman Beyond) could nab a prime-time Emmy for their Batman: The Brave & the Bold musical "Mayhem of the Music Meister," nominated in the series-dramatic score category. Co-nominees are their lyricists Michael Jelenic and James Tucker. Among the many first-time nominees are Bear McCreary, whose much-discussed work on Battlestar Galactica was never nominated but whose theme for Human Target was acknowledged this year; and veteran TV composers Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman (Crossing Jordan, Heroes) were finally nominated for their theme for Showtime's Nurse Jackie.
