Third-time wins for Newman, Callery; first-time wins for others by Jon Burlingame

LOS ANGELES - Sean Callery and Randy Newman each won their third Emmy for music at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony Saturday night, Aug. 21, at the NOKIA Theatre at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles.

On his ninth nomination for the Fox drama 24, Callery won a third time for the "3 p.m. - 4 p.m." episode, the series finale in which Jack Bauer nearly assassinated a Russian leader and was then himself nearly killed. His win in the "music composition for a series" category beat out Michael Giacchino, who was also nominated for a series finale: "The End" from Lost.

Newman has only been nominated three times for Emmy and has won every time. This year he won in the "music and lyrics" category for "When I'm Gone," a poignant farewell song that Newman himself sang in the final moments of another series finale, that of USA's Monk. He previously won in 2004 for his Monk theme, and in 1991 for a song from Cop Rock.

The other honorees are all first-time winners. Alex Wurman (March of the Penguins) won in the "music composition for a miniseries, movie or a special" category for his score for the HBO film Temple Grandin, a moving profile of an autistic teen-ager who grew up to become a respected designer of humane animal handling systems. Claire Danes starred in the movie.

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman won in the "main title theme" category for their playful, funky theme for the Edie Falco Showtime series Nurse Jackie. This was also the first Emmy nomination for the veteran TV composers (Crossing Jordan, Heroes).

Dave Pierce, also a first-time nominee, won in the "music direction" category for his supervision of the music of the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The grand-scale event involved an estimated 300 musicians.

Excerpts from the Creative Arts Awards, including the music categories, will air at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, on E! Entertainment Television. The Primetime Emmy Awards telecast is slated for 8 p.m. Eastern Sunday, Aug. 29, on NBC.
