July 10, 2014 Emmy Music Noms Double Down First-timer Silvestri plus vets Lunn and Ross all receive two nominations each by Jon Burlingame  Alan Silvestri Silvestri, best known for such movie scores as Back to the Future, Forrest Gump and The Avengers, was nominated for both Music Composition for a Series, and Main Title Theme Music, for Fox's documentary Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. Although Silvestri has occasionally scored for the small screen, this was his first weekly-series effort since doing CHiPs in the early 1980s. Scottish composer John Lunn, twice a winner for Downton Abbey, was nominated again for that PBS Masterpiece series as well as in the category of Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or Special for his music for Starz' The White Queen. Three-time Emmy winner William Ross was also a dual nominee, for music direction on ABC's The Oscars and the PBS Great Performances special Barbra Streisand: Back to Brooklyn.  John Lunn  William Ross Most of the names in the Music Composition for a Series category are familiar. In addition to Silvestri and Lunn, Ramin Djawadi (previously a two-time Emmy nominee) was nominated for the first time for his popular Game of Thrones music on HBO. Three-time previous Primetime Emmy winner Jeff Beal received his third nod for music on Netflix's House of Cards; and veteran music producer T Bone Burnett received his first Emmy nomination ever for music on HBO's True Detective. Three of the six nominees in the Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or Special category are first timers: James Levine for FX's American Horror Story: Coven, Ludovic Bource (Oscar winner for The Artist) for HBO's Clear History and Jeff Russo for FX's Fargo. David Arnold and Michael Price received their third nomination for PBS Masterpiece's Sherlock and previous Emmy winner Rob Mathes received a nomination for the HBO documentary Herblock: The Black & the White. Mathes, a frequent nominee for his music direction on The Kennedy Center Honors, was bypassed in the Music Direction category this year, a surprise since that show has been nominated seven out of the past 10 years in that category. In addition to Ross's two nominations and the SNL nod, the nominated musical directors included first-time nominees Don Was for CBS's The Beatles: The Night That Changed America and David Chase for NBC's The Sound of Music Live! Four-time winner Elliot Lawrence and his son Jamie Lawrence (also a previous winner) were again nominated for the CBS telecast of the 67th Annual Tony Awards. In addition to Silvestri's nomination in the Main Title Theme Music category, nominees included last year's winner Bear McCreary, this time for Starz' Black Sails; and first-time nominees Daniele Luppi, for Starz' Magic City, and Andrew Feltenstein and John Nau for IFC's The Spoils of Babylon. Previous nominee Brian Tyler collaborated with first-time nominee Robert Lydecker on the theme for Fox's Sleepy Hollow. The song category, formally known as Music and Lyrics, was crowded with first-timers: Bob Christianson and Alisa Hauser for PBS's A Christmas Carol: The Concert, Joshua Funk and Rebecca Drysdale for Comedy Central's Key & Peele; John William Kavanaugh and Craig Gerber for the Disney Channel's Sofia the First; and Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda for the 67th Annual Tony Awards. Rounding out the category were the SNL song and a song from FX's Sons of Anarchy co-written by previous nominees Bob Thiele and Kurt Sutter and first-time nominee Noah Gunderson.
